Broomfield FISH Harvest of Hope luncheon

What does poverty look like in Broomfield?  You might be surprised.  Sharon is a 69 year old retired police officer who moved to Colorado to be closer to her son and his family.  When her daughter-in-law died in a tragic car crash, she stepped up to help care for her 9 year-old granddaughter.  One day her granddaughter came home from school asking why all of the other kids on the playground always had fruit to eat.  Sharon explained that most of her money went toward rent and medical expenses and they couldn’t afford it.  But then she heard about Broomfield FISH and decided to visit.  FISH sent Sharon home with bags of fresh fruit and vegetables, including her granddaughter’s favorite--bananas.  When her granddaughter arrived home from school, she saw a big bowl of fruit and began to smile.  She said, “Now I feel like a normal kid!”   Sharon and her granddaughter are typical clients of FISH.  In 2014, FISH helped 4.063 Broomfield residents, more than half of whom were children and senior citizens!

This story highlights the theme of the 2015 Harvest of Hope Fundraising Luncheon for FISH-- “Healthy Foods.  Changing LIves.”  The mission of FISH is to meet our neighbors’ basic human needs and provide them with the hope and tools to rise out of poverty.   According to the 2015 Colorado Self Sufficiency Standards, more than 26% of Broomfield residents are at risk of needing services--due to job loss, major medical expenses, divorce, or other circumstances.  FISH helps neighbors in need with food, rent and utility assistance, transportation assistance and the Navigator Program designed to help people become financially stable.  The Harvest of Hope is FISH's biggest fundraiser of the year and the goal is to raise $100,000 to support our programs.

How can you help?  Consider joining FISH on Tuesday, November 10th from 11 am to 1 pm at the Omni Interlocken Hotel for the Annual Harvest of Hope Fundraising Luncheon.  There is no cost to attend the event, but the goal is to raise money and encourage people to support FISH  at whatever level they are comfortable.  To learn more, please call Dayna Scott at 303-465-6817, e-mail dayna.scott@broomfieldfish.org, or simply visit www.broomfieldfish.org.  FISH is looking for corporate and individual sponsors, as well as table hosts to help at the event.
