The inventor of the flute, A.R. Strathmann, lives in a small town in northern
Germany called Melsdorf. He started building these instruments in 1997 and
makes them by hand, one at a time, in his shop. He took a baroque instrument,
the alto blockflute, (or recorder), and designed a complete key system and
acoustical improvements. The instrument sounds like a cross between a
modern flute, a recorder, and a pan fl ute. The concert will feature the instrument
in 4 original compositions, including a world premiere. The pianist, Dave Shuey,
will be joined by cellist Heather Plattenberger and they will also play a few cello
and piano duos.
